Why Alipay matters for foreigners in China

Cash is nearly dead in China. Street vendors, subway stations, restaurants, and even public toilets use QR code payments. Without Alipay or WeChat Pay, you'll struggle to buy a bottle of water.

Since late 2023, China has made it dramatically easier for foreigners to use Alipay. You no longer need a Chinese bank account or a local phone number. A foreign passport and an international Visa or Mastercard is all you need.

Alipay works everywhere in China — from Shanghai's high-end malls to rural noodle shops in Yunnan. It's also your gateway to mini-programs like Didi (ride-hailing), Meituan (food delivery), and 12306 (train tickets).

What you need before you start

A smartphone (iPhone or Android) with a working internet connection. If you don't have a Chinese SIM yet, airport Wi-Fi or your hotel's Wi-Fi works fine for the initial setup.
